Supermarket chain Carrefour is well known in Europe – particularly in France and Italy. It now operates the first Italian supermarket ever opened in Rome, way back in 1961.
It’s no secret that Italy’s economy is in turmoil. So what better way could there have been to promote the store’s 50th birthday, and give back to the community, and stimulate the economy, with a wind-back to 1961 pricing, just for a day?
That’s exactly what Saatchi’s in Milan orchestrated and wound everything back to the booming 60s, with products sold in Lire, at the same prices.
With the results of last year’s promotion now filtering through, multiple zeros in the old currency notwithstanding, this was a huge success for Carrefour: 20,000 customers on the day itself and 387,254,000 Lire taken on the registers.
